OUR SECTORS
Exterior lighting designs need to balance the needs of the human occupants of a space with the need to minimise the effect on the incumbent wildlife. Light spill, glare and dark sky conservation are all key considerations for any development that includes exterior lighting, and in some cases interior lighting too.
Lumenata specialises in providing lighting designs that that minimise the impact on ecology. Lumenata also provides lighting impact assessments for the lighting designs it produces and can also provide lighting impact assessments on the designs produced by others.
As an independent lighting design consultant, Lumenata has an almost infinite array of global suppliers of lighting products to call from ensuring that the best product is recommended for each lighting design we produce. We work with manufacturers from all around the world who are able to tailor their products to suit each application we work on and thus provide the best light for the job.
We are proud to boast that not a single one of our exterior lighting designs submitted by our clients to local authorities as part of a planning application has been rejected due to the lighting design, so you can rest assured, that by working with Lumenata, you are in good hands.

BAT-FRIENDLY LIGHTING DESIGNS
While some species of bats forage on insects that are attracted to light, it is generally accepted that lighting is not great for the bat population and we should be minimising the impact of any exterior lighting on the population of this species that is protected by law.
Lumenata has produced many lighting designs where the presence of bats has been an issue as part of a planning application and has a successful formula that allows these lighting designs to be accepted by local authority planners.
MAINTAINING DARK SKIES
It is estimated that 80% of the world’s population has a reduced view of the stars at night. Light glow is a phenomena where airborne particles are illuminated by light pollution from poor exterior lighting designs and light glow can mask our view of the stars at night.
By using the best products, in the best locations, Lumenata’s lighting designs reduce light pollution, thus reducing light glow and helping to maintain the dark skies of the world we live in.
LIGHTING DESIGNS FOR PLANNING APPLICATIONS
More and more local authorities are now insisting that a detailed lighting design and lighting impact assessment accompany a planning application that contains a degree of exterior lighting (as most projects do) or is close to sensitive ecology or protected wildlife such as bats.
Whether you are embarking on a new planning application that requires an ecology friendly lighting design or have a lighting design planning condition that needs to be discharged, Lumenata can help.
Our lighting designs are very thorough and demonstrate how light can be managed to minimise the impact of both internal and external lighting on wildlife and ecology.
Working with Lumenata will enable you to strengthen your planning application by including a robust lighting design that demonstrates you are sympathetic to the needs of the wildlife resident in the area of your project.
Or if you have a lighting design planning condition that needs to be discharged, our lighting designs will demonstrate to the local authority that you have considered the needs of the wildlife incumbent to your project while at the same time maintaining the dark skies above the area of your project.
Case Studies
We are very proud of our track record for ecology-friendly lighting designs and can boast a 100% success rate with our schemes being approved by local authority planners. This is because, as a lighting specialist, we understand the needs of an exterior lighting design that has to be sensitive to ecology and the requirements that local authorities place in planning application submissions. Our designs use the latest lighting technology to help to minimise the impact on ecology.
