Bluestone Project

Location: Bluestone, Narberth, Pembrokeshire
Brief: To achieve planning consent for a 72 lodge extension in an area of outstanding natural beauty
Technology: Dimmable LED bollards, SMART LED Street Lights

Our client was seeking approval from its local authority for a 72 lodge extension, but being in an area of outstanding natural beauty and on the edge of a forest needed careful lighting design and planning to avoid disturbing local wildlife, including bats. We modelled the light spill from the different lodge designs and the exterior landscape lighting and demonstrated that light spill was kept to a minimum and within local authority guidelines resulting in the planning application being approved.

Planning is a key element to everything that Lumenata do. Local authorities are increasingly requesting reports and analysis showing the effect of new developments on the surrounding areas, with light pollution being no exception.

An exterior lighting scheme was proposed that was both friendly to the bats and other wildlife that might be affected. This included the use of dark sky lighting products, warm colour temperatures and SMART lighting controls that allowed the exterior lights to be dimmed during the night when there is hardly any pedestrian activity. The internal lodge designs were fined tuned and models produced for each of the lodges that run adjacent to the woodland. The lighting scheme was approved by all the stakeholders involved and planning consent was given.
