Liverpool Cathedral

Brief: To introduce LED lighting sympathetic to a historic building

Liverpool’s Anglican Cathedral is Britain’s largest cathedral and the 5th biggest in Europe. Its large cavernous structure makes it a challenge to light, especially with the advent of energy-efficient LED Lighting Technology, as it had proved to the architectural stakeholders of the Cathedral. Part of the problem was that the stark, cool white generated by LEDs is not in keeping with the traditional look and feel of the sodium lighting that has been used there for years.
Our client was keen to move to LED, but needed the technology installed to closely mimic the hue of the traditionally used sodium lighting. Working with one of our specialist LED manufacturing partners, we were able to supply custom built, dimmable LED floodlights with a colour temperature that reflected that of the Cathedral’s much loved sodium lighting.
Previous suppliers had provided an LED solution for the Cathedral to test, only to be told that the light generated was not right and with these lights lighting the space from 30 metre high positions, it was essential that the lights did the right job.
Product Used – 300w dimming floodlight with beam angle control – extra warm white LEDs.
Result
When Lumenata were tasked with finding a solution, we immediately recognised what was needed. Working with one of our bespoke lighting manufacturers, a dimmable floodlight was proposed using extra warm white LEDs that would generate the required lumen output to give the needed lux levels on the ground floor level of the Cathedral. Having been let down so many times before, we were asked to provide a sample to test, which was duly installed and approved.
