Brief: To reduce lighting running costs in a Wesleyan Church

Our aim is to use lighting design to emphasise the architectural features of these glorious buildings, while at the same time providing functional levels of light where needed. This is achieved by using cost effective, energy efficient LED lighting products and technologies, effortlessly controlled with modern lighting controls with fully compatible, dimmable LED lighting.
Old buildings such as churches are packed with architectural features making them a joy to light. Carefully placed luminaires can be the difference between simply lighting an old building and enhancing every buttress, archway or column. We understand the need to be sympathetic with the architecture of the building, while providing the light levels and functionality required by a modern lighting installation. Our written proposals cover all aspects of the designed scheme, which allows the church members to confidently submit to their diocese for approval.
Result
Light has always served as a metaphor of the religious messages of salvation, but the master-builders of the past could only dream of the design possibilities that today’s lighting design offer for illuminating sacred rooms. The great variety of styles within Liverpool Cathedral calls for a dramatic distribution of light and shadow zones and of artificial and natural light.
With this in mind, in the main aisles of the cathedral, low-voltage halogen lamps have been mounted on the capitals of the columns to softly illuminate the apex of the roof vaulting. Conversely, the high dome vaulting is lit up by stronger spotlights. Both the cathedral’s architectural lighting and the accent lighting of the artworks were integral parts of the lighting design. As was the special lighting for the altar and pews.
