PROJECTS

St Peter & St Paul Church

Location: Rishton, Lancashire
Brief: To improve the lighting in a traditional church
Technology: LED Spotlights, Lighting Control System

Light in sacred buildings takes on a symbolic function: light represents the presence of higher powers and lends buildings and objects themselves a certain splendour and magnificence. Its symbolic nature is borne out by the direction of the light and the height of the light source. Light from above, emitted from an inivisible source, creates a magical aura, whereas the low position of floor washlights emphasises the mystical and dramatic dimension.

For this project, Lumenata used accent lighting for the wall paintings, statues and the surface textures of ornamental details. Using lighting in this way emphasises the significance of these buildings. Ceiling lights were used to additionally enhance the protective character of the domes and ceilings.

Result

When Lumenata were tasked with finding a solution, we immediately recognised what was needed. Working with one of our bespoke lighting manufacturers, a dimmable floodlight was proposed using extra warm white LEDs that would generate the required lumen output to give the needed lux levels on the ground floor level of the Cathedral. Having been let down so many times before, we were asked to provide a sample to test, which was duly installed and approved.
